Our Story – Sika's Version

Our story is simple. After many unsuccessful attempts at online dating and revisiting old flings, I decided it was time to approach the dating scene with true intentions. I created a new Hinge account by providing honest descriptors of what I desired and who I was. Now, of course, I posted a collage of pics that showed off my various hairstyles because my future bae needed to know I like to switch it up! After combining my written intentions with prayer and meditation, I patiently waited to see whom God would reveal.

Not long after creating my account, I came across a profile of a handsome chocolate man smiling and making it known he was on the app to date, not looking for sexy rendezvous or being bombarded with the pressure of immediate marriage, which was a sigh of relief. What caught my attention was some of his photos, including his mother. I said to myself, “This is a man who loves his mother, and I am sure he respects women.” I was hooked. I responded to his request, and the chat commenced. Fast forward six weeks, and we had our first date at a comedy show. I knew we would be an item.

Our dates evolved from seeing each other every four weeks to weekly, and by mid-spring, we were official.

Time flew by. Before I knew it, it was December 31 and extremely cold outside. It was only a few days prior that Shyheid, along with my neighbor, saved my home from flooding due to frozen pipes while my family was out of town. Upon our return, I was so grateful to see him as we prepared to celebrate the sixth day of Kwanzaa, Kuumba. Unbeknownst to me, Shyheid had another reason for us to celebrate. With my back to him, he asked if I was ready, and I assumed he meant for us to leave. When I turned around, I saw a black box in his hand; U’Leia stopped in her tracks and hid sheepishly behind the stairwell, waiting for my response. I giggled nervously, repeating the question aloud, thinking perhaps it was just a birthday present – my birthday was only four days prior. However, I realized it was the real deal as he knelt and opened the box! Yes, I exclaimed!

I knew he was the one because he brought me peace. Shyheid accepts me for who I am. He is caring, loving, and a provider. There is no competition. I love him and am grateful for this new season in life!
